Interesting is that it not only has good amount of objective and factual text on geisha culture and philosophy, but also her subjective experience as a Pontocho geisha, thus reading like both a textbook and autobiography. The novel's protagonist is Sayuri, a geisha who is sold and forced to part with her family to an okiya in Gion, a geisha district in Kyoto, Japan. The story is loosely based on the autobiography of the famous retired geisha Mineko Iwasaki (who was one of the sources for Arthur Golden's Memoirs of a Geisha). Translated from the Japanese by G. Iwasaki later went on to write her own autobiography, an account vastly different from Arthur Golden's novel, published as Geisha, A Life in the US and Geisha of Gion in the UK. Title: Autobiography of a Geisha (Vintage Original). Nakahara Masaya is a fairly popular guy, it seems. Download ebook or buy real book: “90-Day Geisha: My Time as a Tokyo Hostess” by Chelsea Haywood. I ended up doing 斉藤環's review of 中原昌也's autobiography, 死んでも何も残さない. Moochable copies: No copies available. No other geiko or geisha in the history of the profession had ever come forward to discuss their life or training. Another book I really recommend is Autobiography of a Geisha. Non-fiction - paperback; Vintage East; 224 pages; 2006. Sayo Masuda : Autobiography of a Geisha (Vintage Original) ? It's the autobiography of a geisha, Mineko Iwasaki (whom Arthur Golden acknowledged at the end of his book: Memoirs of a Geisha). Last October 2011, I got my hands into a book that I really wanted to read: Geisha of Gion. After Forbidden Love, which was explicitedly stated as an autobiography, but most of it turned out to be made up. Kyoto geisha were always the privileged ones, so to say, but there were women who entertained all over the country and were much more like prostitutes. I plan on reading Geisha of Gion by Mineko Iwasaki, a memoir/autobiography of the geisha Golden interviewed for his information for this book. While there was no written rule against this, it was frowned upon for professional and historical reasons.
